Andy Hart (@mavenadviser) brought his Humans Under Management conference to Dublin last week following the great success of the inaugural event in London last year. Over 200 Financial Planning experts attended the event which was held in the fantastic O’Brien Centre for Science on the UCD campus. The sun was shining throughout the day allowing delegates to stroll around the Belfield campus during the breaks. For the overseas delegates, we promise it isn’t always like that!

Andy brought together some great speakers from Ireland, the UK and Netherlands to speak on the intriguing topic of “All Things Behavioural Financial Advice”. I was honoured to be asked to speak about the Metis Ireland story and I must admit that although I am quite used to public speaking, I was extremely nervous at the prospect of speaking in front of my peers. I shouldn’t have fretted so much however as the messages of support I received before the event and on the day were very reassuring and helped to ease some of the nerves! I hope the audience got something out of my contribution as I know that I benefitted hugely from the other speakers.

I’m told that my presentation was recorded and that it will be available in a few weeks (gulp!). In summary:

·         Sandra Bullock’s husband is thinking of moving to Texas

·         Snow Boarding gets loads of views on LinkedIn

·         Evidenced Based Investing videos do not get loads of views on LinkedIn

We heard from lots of different speakers in short 30-minute segments throughout the day which is a nice change from sitting through 45 minute or hour-long presentations. I really believe that this is the way all conferences should be formatted as it allows for lots of interaction throughout the day with your fellow attendees and ensures the presenters are challenged to get the core message across in a clear and concise manner.

Having had lots of discussions with like minded Financial Planning firms on the day, and indeed since the conference, I am really excited for what the future holds for our great profession. There is a movement (is revolution too strong a word?) happening in Ireland where Financial Planning firms are beginning to realise that our clients deserve more from us and that a comprehensive Financial Plan must come first before the implementation of various financial solutions.

It fundamentally changes how we do business and allows us to ALWAYS put the client first. At Metis Ireland, we believe the best way forward in the long term is to always give great advice. We do not sell financial products. We provide Honest Experienced Financial Planning. In doing this, we can make a difference to our clients lives. That, I hope is our legacy.

I look forward to attending Humans Under Management 2019, without the pressure of a speaking role!
