In a guide for business owners written by Metis Ireland, it’s a safe bet that the subject of planning will come up a fair bit, so here it is again (it won’t be the last mention).

Planning is a funny thing. It’s part of daily life and yet it’s something we still need to deliberately remind ourselves to do. As business owners we plan all day long – strategy, cash flow, next steps. There’s so much planning in the day-to-day that we might not realise we’re doing it, yet when it comes to planning our own future we don’t always find it so easy.

There’s something about it that encourages a bit of resistance. In the same way that creative people can procrastinate about starting a project, for fear that in making it ‘real’ they’re somehow making it ‘imperfect’, we can be unwilling to take the lid off. But plan we must.

“Planning is bringing the future into the present so that you can do something about it now.” – Alan Lakein

Get your planning hat on

It’s not like you’re lacking the ability – you’re already doing a great job of planning the future of your business (which is effectively a separate person). You’re also well aware that outside forces don’t always allow that plan to unfold perfectly, and you know it’s not easy to stick to a plan through difficult times.

You have the understanding and the experience to set out and work towards your goals, but it’s no good doing it for the business while your own future is yet to see pen meet paper. Unless you’re planning to stay still for the rest of your life, don’t be the apocryphal cobbler with holes in his own shoes.

Working with the expert help of a professional wealth planner you can apply the same rigour and foresight to your personal finances, set out a roadmap to your goals and stick to it.

Let us guide you

Over the coming weeks we’ll be sharing ten tips to taking care of your future, so that you can focus on taking care of your business safe in the knowledge that it’s all under control.
