While you’re taking care of business, are you taking care of you? As much as ‘you’ and ‘the business’ may seem interchangeable, they’re not. It’s important to step back and ask yourself, “what does the rest of my life look like?”
“What is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?” – Mary Oliver
OK, as we get older our lives may not be quite so wild anymore, but they’re still precious. In fact, they’re arguably more precious than ever. If you’ve made a success of your business, as you transition into retirement you’re in a position that many people will never experience. You have the freedom to do pretty much whatever you want.
To retire or not to retire
Strangely enough, retirement still carries a stigma, particularly among successful people. There’s a self-defeating misconception that it’s an ending when, in fact, it’s a beginning. Retirement can be whatever you want it to be – as relaxed as you feel you deserve or as dynamic as you want to make it – but you need to be clear about the life you want to live.
Many people feel they have an idea of what the future should be, the things they’d like to do ‘at some point’ but that’s just wishing. Wishing is to planning what buying exercise equipment is to getting fit.
You need a plan – a written plan – and the trick is to focus on ‘your retirement’. It’s not a generic concept. It’s your life and future, and it’s the one time that the business takes second billing. Before you started your business you had goals, dreams, and aspirations – so dig them out, dust them down and get them on paper.
It would be a tragedy if you spent your life giving yourself the means at the expense of the purpose.
