Meeting Fund Managers in London
Myself, Karl Daly & Ian Cooke took off to London in late June to meet with fund managers Dimensional. We went through an intensive two day foundation course, getting to know the team at Dimensional and exactly what they stood for. We found that the Metis Ireland investment philosophy was similar to Dimensional and it was definitely a trip well worth taking.
Interestingly, and something we should learn from in the Irish market, Metis Ireland funded this trip entirely.
We travelled over on Wednesday morning early and made our way to Regents Park for the foundation course (on what was the hottest day of the year!). It really is a fantastic part of London and an area I would like to spend more time in sometime soon.
From the start, it was evident that Dimensional are a world class firm and the speaker line up over the two days was exceptional. It was also so refreshing to hear from fund managers who practice what we are preaching!
Some nuggets that I took away from the event were:
- Investment is not speculation
- Investment is Long Term
- Take a 15 year time horizon and only 1 in 5 active fund managers outperform their benchmark
- There are certain “dimensions” of expected returns in equity markets:
- Company Size
- Relative Price
- Costs matter
- Stick with your plan
We promise to always research and seek out the very best fund managers available to our clients. This trip proves we can walk the walk. In my view, too many talk the talk. Every day we focus on what is best for our clients. Every day we follow through on our promise to place our client at the centre of everything we do.
We will continue to invest in the development of our proposition to our clients.
If you are a client of Metis Ireland and you are reading this, well then I hope it gives even more comfort than I know you already had! If you aren’t yet a client of Metis Ireland but think that you might like some of our investment philosophies and business practices, be sure to contact us.
